What Is Periodontitis

Advanced gum disease (periodontitis) affects the supporting tissues of the teeth and may result in tooth loss. It is relatively common, affecting at least 1 in 10 adults. Unfortunately it is a “silent” disease and does not give enough signs and symptoms until it is too late.

It is caused by bacteria that form a biofilm on the surface of the teeth, especially in hard to reach areas. Some people are more susceptible than others, this is often genetic. Smoking makes you more susceptible to gum disease. Also, there is a potential link between gum disease and general health, for example heart disease or diabetes, but even other conditions such as chest infections and arthritis.

The role of the Specialist Periodontist is to assess the level of risk, diagnose and manage advanced gum disease with the ultimate goal to prevent tooth loss. Added benefits to you are a healthier and cleaner mouth, prevention of dental disease, e.g. caries (decay), and a fresher breath.

The treatment is mostly non-surgical, very occasionally there is an indication to do surgery and in all cases a maintenance phase follows to ensure stability.
