These steps can ease discomfort until you see us. They don’t replace emergency treatment, so book first.

• Severe toothache

Take over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, following the dose on the pack. Never hold a painkiller against your gum. Rinse with warm salt water and avoid very hot, cold, or sugary food. If severe pain continues, call us as soon as possible.

• Dental abscess or swelling

Hold a compress against your cheek for 15 minutes at a time to reduce swelling, and take painkillers as directed. Don’t try to burst it. An abscess is a dental emergency: it won’t clear up on its own and needs treatment to stop further complications. If swelling spreads towards your eye or neck, or you feel very unwell, seek urgent care straight away.

• Broken or chipped tooth

After a dental emergency like this, rinse your mouth with warm water and keep any pieces of tooth in a clean container. A cold compress helps with swelling. Cover sharp edges with dental wax from a pharmacy and avoid biting on that side, especially on the chewing surface of the damaged tooth.

• Knocked-out tooth

A knocked-out tooth is a time-sensitive emergency. Pick the tooth up by the white crown, not the root. If it’s dirty, rinse it briefly in milk. Gently push it back into the socket and bite on a clean cloth to hold it in place. If you can’t keep it in milk or in your mouth against your cheek. Getting to an emergency dentist within an hour gives the best chance of saving it.

• Lost filling or crown

Keep the crown safe and bring it with you. Dental wax or a temporary filling kit from a pharmacy can protect the tooth for a short time. Lost fillings can expose the inner pulp, so book soon if the tooth is sensitive. Never glue a crown back on yourself.

• Bleeding and soft tissue injuries

For bleeding from the gum or a tooth socket, bite firmly on a clean, damp cloth or gauze for 15 minutes. For soft tissue injuries to the lips, cheek, or tongue, apply gentle pressure and a cold compress. If the bleeding doesn’t slow down, go to A&E.
